Sorted by the animal, not by the product

An online shop for pest control products, arranged two ways at once. You can browse traps, repellers and baits, or start from the animal that is actually in your roof.

The brief

A customer arriving at a pest control shop has an animal, not a product category. They know there are rats. They do not know whether they want a bait, a trap or an ultrasonic repeller, and a catalogue organised by product type asks them to decide before they can look.

What we built

  1. 01

A browse by animal type row across the top: snakes, rats, cats, dogs, birds, insects and rabbits

  2. 02

Product categories kept alongside it, for the customer who already knows what they want

  3. 03

Both routes landing on the same product set rather than two separate catalogues

  4. 04

Parts and accessories given their own category, because a repeller that needs a new stake is a repeat customer

Screens

The Derwent Traders homepage on a dark green ground: a snake repeller product hero, then a Browse by Animal Type row of snakes, rats, cat, dog, bird, insects and rabbit, above cards for Traps, Repellers, Baits and Parts and Accessories.
Browse by animal, or by product. Both land on the same catalogue.
A product detail page for a pest control device, with the packaging photographed, the price, and specifications beneath.
A product page. The packaging is photographed as it arrives, because that is what a customer recognises in a shed.
A products listing page showing a grid of traps, repellers and baits with prices.
The product route, for the customer who already knows they want a trap.

Outcomes

  • A customer can start from the problem rather than the solution

  • Two ways of thinking about the same catalogue, without maintaining it twice
